Now that you’ve taken the time to learn how to mix you are most likely going to want to know how to become a DJ fast. The next steps you take can either set you on a course to becoming a successful DJ or conversely send you trekking in the wrong direction. The internet is full of all the right information you need to launch your superstar career but it’s equally full of advice from non-working DJ’s who really don’t know the right way to go. Here’s part one of a three part series of articles to help get you moving in the right direction.
FIND INSPIRATION
Now that you can mix and have the tools to practice your skills, you will need to fuel your passion for DJing. This will help you learn everything that you need to know about music, the industry and how to become a DJ. You most likely already have a list of your favourite DJ’s as this is probably what sparked your interest in the first place. Seek out successful DJ’s playing the music you love the most and follow them.
I don’t mean, follow in their footsteps and copy everything they do. That would be a big mistake! What I mean is follow them on social media, download their DJ mixes and radio shows, buy their music and see them when they’re playing in your city or hometown.
Thanks to social media it’s not that difficult to become part of a community that has open arms to new fans, friends and family. The dance music community in particular is famous for their approach to unity and the belief that life is all about having a great time. Become part of the scene and get involved with your idols as you never know, one day you might be sharing the stage with them.
Even the biggest artists in the world are fans of other DJ’s and producers. The people we respect and look up to inspire us all, having direct access to hearing how the DJ’s at the top of the game speak about the industry themselves can pass on a wealth of knowledge.
PRACTICE IS EVERYTHING
There’s no such thing as too much practice. The more you practice in the early stages of your career, the more prepared you will be for the main stage when the time comes. Being prepared for any opportunity is everything. Shortly you will be at the level where it’s time to start getting gigs. The countless hours you spend mastering perfect seamless mixes and experimenting with your style at home will give you the confidence to perform in front of a nightclub full of people.
As you progress along the many stages of your journey as a DJ, you will also find less and less time to practice DJing. Working DJ’s often play so many shows that the only time they actually DJ is when they’re in front of a crowd. The crowds will get bigger, the competition will get harder and the general responsibilities of being a professional DJ will hinder your ability to have time to jump on the decks at home.
Make the most of the time you have available to practice and take it all in while you can. Practice with other DJ’s, show off your skills to friends and enjoy every minute.
INVEST WISELY
Investing isn’t just about spending money on DJ equipment, educational tools, music and concert tickets. Before you start... have you asked yourself these questions?
+ Why do I want to be a DJ?
+ Do I want to do this just for fun or professionally as well?
+ What sort of DJ do I want to be?
+ How can DJing have a positive impact on my life?
+ How badly do I want to make it?
By answering these essential questions, you will hopefully paint a clearer picture of what you hope to achieve with DJing. The next step is to set yourself some goals so that you have something to strive towards. A goal is merely a dream until you write it down. Write it down and now you have a plan!
Ultimately, time is your most valuable commodity. Getting the most out of your time is imperative – especially if you have a goal, dream or aspiration. No matter how you label it, if DJing is what you want to do with your life and you’re prepared to give it your all, invest your time wisely on the things that really matter in order to consistently progress to the next step.
