The key to learning how to become a DJ fast is getting as much hands on experience as possible. One of the most exciting times of your career is when you first get enough confidence to start getting out there and looking for gigs.

The best place to start is at your local club nights or venues that are putting on DJ’s on a regular basis. Before you start knocking down doors and asking for DJ gigs, start showing your face at all the local venues socially. You have a much better chance of a promoter giving you a go if they regularly see you attending their club nights and DJ events, as opposed to simply cold-calling out of nowhere.

It’s important for a promoter to know that you understand what it takes to make the music at their event successful. You’ll also learn a lot from the other DJ’s by simply paying attention to the music that they’re playing and essentially noticing which DJ’s are keeping the floor pumping. You’ll also notice the DJ’s that aren’t doing so well and as a result have little to no local following, you can definitely learn from their mistakes.

Networking has a huge role in the music industry, so try to meet as many of the local DJ’s, promoters and staff as you can. By becoming friends with people that are involved in the same industry as you, you will not only increase your chance of getting opportunities as a DJ, but you’ll also meet some great people along the way that share your passion for music and you will inevitably influence each other.

When it does come time to start asking for gigs, don’t be afraid to offer your services for free, you’ll need to prove your worth and there are many factors to be considered in the eyes of the promoter.

Another great way to gain exposure is by entering DJ competitions, if you find that your local venues don’t host them, don’t worry, you’ll find a number of DJ competitions are held online through music blogs. These competitions usually require you to create a DJ mix and submit it online. Getting involved in things like this help you learn and are great practice, they also provide a good gauge for you to see how you’re going with your mixes.

Some internationally famous DJ’s launched their career by winning a local DJ competition. Another great way to gain build up your confidence and gain experience playing in front of a crowd and is by playing at all your friends’ parties, that way you can be in a comfortable environment around people who you know and trust that they won’t judge you if you make a mistake. Your friends can also be your biggest asset when you’re first starting out.
